Mental Health

One in four adults will experience a mental illness at some point each year in the UK. This includes many young people studying at University. If you find yourself feeling stressed, or anxious, or generally feel unable to do your assessments, there are a number of support services within the University and Union. 

If you have assessments coming up and you don't feel ready to complete them, you could get an Extension or Deferral on the work, to allow you extra time to complete them. You can find some advice on these on our website here: https://www.chestersu.com/advice/academic/mitigatingcircumstances/

Depression and Anxiety

 

Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health problems in the UK and they can manifest themselves in different ways. Whilst everyone can feel sad or worried from time to time, if your feelings are becoming so strong that they are affecting your life it is important to seek help. Talking to the Doctors would be a good first step.

 

  • Mind have extensive factsheets about anxiety and depression. 
  • Depression Alliance provides information about depression, how to live with depression and where to get help.
  • No Panic offers support for sufferers of panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders.

 

The Samaritans provide confidential, non judgemental support 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide. You can contact them by phone on 08457 90 90 90. You can also contact your local Samaritans branch by putting your postcode into the Branch Finder.

 

Self-Harm

 

Self-harm is often a way of coping with painful and difficult feelings and distress. Someone may harm themselves because they feel overwhelmed and don't know how else to deal with things. It's usually a very private issue and motivations and methods will differ from one person to another.

 

Self-harm can include harmful behaviours such as self-injury: cutting, burning, biting, head banging, hitting, and pulling out hair. It can also include risk taking behaviour, eating disorders and substance abuse.

National Self Harm Network aims to support, empower and educate individuals and their families about self harm in order to reduce their emotional distress and to improve their quality of life. Suicidal Thoughts

 

Everyone has different reasons for wanting to end their lives and some people feel like they have no reason at all. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, then you should try to talk to someone about those thoughts before making any decisions.

HOPElineUK is a specialist telephone helpline who give non-judgmental support, practical advice and information to young people up to the age of 35 who are worried about themselves or for anyone who is concerned about a young person. They listen in confidence and try to help you deal with your own suicidal thoughts or cope with someone else who may be experiencing these emotions.
