It is with great sadness that we learnt this week of the passing of Joseph Rawlings OBE our founder and first Officer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and we are sorry for their loss.
When Joe arrived at Chester College aged 22 he felt that students were not treated as adults or given the right to make their own decisions and lobbied for the creation of the Guild of Students. In 1937 he became the first President. Last year's President Cherelle visited him in 2017 and the blog of her visit can be found here.
The qualities that Joe brought to the task of demanding representation for Chester students came to the fore in many ways during his life, as a seaman during the war and as a lifelong member of the Scout movement and a flavour of the person can be seen in his official memoriam.
The current trustees of the Union are considering ways in which we can permanently mark the contribution of Joe to our movement.
