Exterior of Chester Students' Union

This past summer saw a series of huge changes here at Chester Students’ Union. Not only did we welcome four new elected officers to the team and facilitate the transfer of our sports to the brand new Athletics Union, but our space on Parkgate Road campus also underwent its first major refurbishment since we first moved in back in 2007!

In response to repeated student demand, we've removed our shop and replaced it with an open-access kitchen area, complete with kettles and microwaves so you’re able to heat up your own food or prepare hot drinks for free.

Accompanying this, we’ve drastically expanded the amount of seating available – couches and low tables sit alongside more traditional workstations and comfy beanbags to create an eclectic space that has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to study, a place to eat your lunch or somewhere to meet with your mates, our new social space is the perfect place!

One of the major issues pre-refurb was the accessibility of staff and your elected officers. Once you were inside the building, it wasn’t entirely clear where we were or what we did. To combat this, we’ve moved our entire operation downstairs, with staff and elected officers split into two offices on opposite sides of the floor. We’re now more visible than ever before, so whether you need to chat to Rio about a society, Mel about SERs, El about Green Impact, Advice about Housing or Marketing about promoting your event, you’ll be able to find us at the drop of a hat.

We also have a brand new meeting room that’s available to all students and societies to book for study groups, society events and more!

Coming in the next few weeks, we hope to have some funky new artwork up on the walls and are actively seeking a talented student artist to help us decorate our massive blackboards with a CSU-themed mural. If you’d be interested in helping out or have any suggestions, please send an email to csumarketing@chester.ac.uk.

Speaking about the move, CSU President Eleanor Lewis said ‘over the summer, CSU welcomed a refurbishment of the downstairs space, meaning your CSU officers and staff are downstairs and much more accessible. The best part of the refurb is the all-new effective student space. It’s comfy and welcoming, just what you asked for. We hope you love it as much as us.’

We’ve already hosted a huge range of events in our new home – pop-ups from commercial partner Hi-Chew were a raging success, Housing Festival saw over a dozen housing providers visit over the space of a month and the Department for Education and Cheshire Constabulary recently both attended to promote their ongoing campaigns. The best way to find out what’s coming up is to follow us on social media: @chesterstudentsunion on Facebook and Instagram and @ChesterSU on Twitter.
