About Our Group

Welcome to the homepage of the University of Chester Swing Dance society!

'Tain't what you do it's the way that you do it!'

What is swing dancing?

Swing dancing is a fun, enjoyable way to make new friends, exercise and learn a new type of dancing you've probably never heard of before! It is a form of jazz-style dancing developed in 1920s, 30s and 40s America with a range of different styles; but we focus primarily on Lindy hop, Charleston and Solo jazz. By nature, swing dancing is very sociable but don't worry if you're shy, our group is really friendly and many of our members have developed loads of confidence through attending our sessions!

Do I need experience or a partner?

NO! You don't need to have any dance experience to join our society; just a willingness to learn as we teach everyone basic steps first, then build upon these to further our knowledge.  Swing dancing is a partnered dance (like the dances on strictly come dancing) but you don't need a partner to join and everyone rotates throughout the class so you end up dancing with everybody anyway!

Do you just dance to old music?

Although the music of big bands (such as Louis Armstrong and Glen Miller) is traditionally associated with swing dancing; we like to include some modern songs aswell including requests from our members (e.g. in our Halloween session we danced to Thriller and the Pokemon theme). Swing Dancing is very versatile, and you may even see us dancing in Rosies or in the campus Bar.

Socials?

We hold a variety of socials throughout the year including sober ones (so don't worry if you don't drink) and trips to Mersey Swing (a swing dance class in Liverpool) to learn new moves and to practice social dancing with different people.

Kathryn Walsh – ‘I really enjoyed swing dance this year. I got to meet people from courses I don't normally get the chance to interact with. Also, while classed as a society, swing dance gave me the chance to get some exercise as I don't like most sports. It holds a fun, inclusive atmosphere and I can't wait to see what next year brings.’
