LGBTQ+ Society

We are the LGBTQ+ Society! (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer plus others)

LGBTQ+ Society written in white on a background of the progress flag featuring rainbow colours, BAME pride colours and transgender flag colours.

This is a social society that promotes inclusivity among our members and the wider community.

The LGBTQ+ society is a safe space for people to connect with others like themselves, and to have fun with those who understand their individual experiences. We can also signpost people to further support or resources, and we raise awareness and funds for LGBTQ+ charities.

Our values

  • To create a sense of belonging here at the University of Chester
  • To enable members with similar life experiences to support each other
  • To provide an open and non-judgmental base for discussion
  • To facilitate understanding of LGBTQ+ issues in the University and wider community
  • To challenge LGBTQ+ issues in the University and wider community
  • To support LGBTQ+ charities through campaigns to raise awareness and fundraising events
  • To collaborate with other University of Chester societies and LGBTQ+ groups from other Universities to foster new connections and a wider network of allies

Many of these can be hosted online but can also be run in person with appropriate social distancing and hygiene measures in place, so there will be something for everyone!

Queer Media Club and In the Spotlight will run once a month, on the day of the week that suits the majority of members.

Fundraising events will be held on a bimonthly basis, once every two months, at a set date and time notified in advance.

Pride Month celebrations will occur throughout February 2021.

Intersectional celebrations will occur at various times throughout the year (e.g. Black History Month is celebrated throughout October 2020 and will be highlighted during this time).

Holiday events occur seasonally and will be based on the cultural and religious practices of our members.

Chester Pride dates are yet to be announced but will likely be in August 2021 – it would be fantastic for our society to show our pride and march that weekend!

We would absolutely love to welcome new members to the LGBTQ+ society!

We’re a friendly bunch and very supportive, no matter where you are on your life journey. There is a space for everyone here, and we ensure that everyone is seen and heard. And so, all your contributions will be respected and valued – and we’re open to suggestions and feedback, so if there’s something you want to see from us, let us know!

We run regular events – some fun and social, some educational talks – and we are a great support network for any issues you may face during your time at University (although hopefully there won’t be any)! And we want to actively give back to the charities that do so much for the LGBTQ+ community, through volunteering our time and fundraising. So if you want to be part of a society that has fun but also makes a difference, this is the one for you!

We also have opportunities for committee roles for new joiners, so if you want to get involved in the operations of the society and gain some new experience for your CV, we’d love to help facilitate that!

We welcome all members, including those who fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, those questioning, and allies.

To be updated following Diversity, Inclusion & Accessibility training in September.

However, we always endeavour to ensure our events are accessible for all, including both physical and online activities.

Please let us know if there are any adjustments we could make to ensure the comfort and participation of all our members.
