Over the summer, the Elected Officers and a student focus group have worked tirelessly to put together a month-long celebration of activities, virtual events, discussions and conversations to celebrate Black History Month (BHM).

This campaign launches during a time where we as a Union are on a journey to become explicitly anti-racist to make positive change and show solidarity with our BAME members.

The aim of celebrating BHM at CSU is to celebrate the history of our Black students at the University. Previously, this has not been recognised as much as we think it should and with the recent development of the Black Lives Matter movement, we need to support our Black students the best way we can.

The title of the month chosen by students is Black, British and Proud.  The campaign is split into four themed weeks:

Week 1 – w/c 5th October – Education week

Week 2 – w/c 12th October – Arts week

Week 3 – w/c 19th October – Culture week

Week 4 – w/c 26th October – Sport & Business week

The full schedule of activity will be released on our Facebook account throughout the month with some highlights including: a Q&A with Stephen Bourne (writer of Black Poppies), a virtual discussion with the University to discuss educational experiences of Black students and a DJ set celebrating Caribbean music and culture.

In addition to this, we’re sharing Black inspirational profiles on social media, dance performances by students at University Centre Shrewsbury, TikToks which address the topic of micro-aggressions, a BHM Spotify playlist and have even created a virtual recipe book!

We hope to see as many of our students involved with the month-long celebration and want to say a special thank you to all those students who helped us plan and deliver the campaign.
