Welcome to The University of Chester Orchestra Society ... (Society of the Year no doubt!)
We like to play a mixture of music; from film scores to classical movements, popular television themes to well known songs, all with the aim to not only have fun but to bring the joy of music to the public.Together we are so much more than a random selection of people from different backgrounds, we are a group joined by music but united by friendship. Our goal is to challenge ourselves, support our charities, explore the world of music and break the orchestral stereotype of being just a group of geeks (for which we are so much more!), all whilst having a great time!
We rehearse on a Sunday evening (5-7pm) every week and have regular events throughout the year which you will be made aware of in advance, also absolutely everyone is welcome to join us!
In 2016/2017 we played at a variety of different events and venues both within the University as well as in and around Chester. Some of these include our notorious Christmas concert, the Society ball awards evening which took place at the famous Racecourse, the popular George and the Dragon pub and busking at the Cross in the centre of Chester. This year Orchestra have worked very hard towards fundraising for our charity by attending and performing at many events. Our Christmas concert raised over £177 for Nordoff Robbins which we were absolutely delighted about. Last year's president also lead a fabulous 'Zumbathon' raising a brilliant £87. We also raised a significant amount for the other charities we support including Marie Curie, Children In Need and 'Milking it for Money'. We did this by busking, holding 'turn up in your PJ's' rehearsals as well as members of our previous committee being brave enough to have milk tipped over their heads as part of a Students Union event. In total, we are very proud to say that we raised over £2000 last year, helping to make a significant difference to the fabulous charities we support.
In 2017/2018 we hope to have an even bigger and better year than 2016/2017. We want to organise more charity events for next year as well as beat our fundraising target once again so we can carry on providing opportunities for people less fortunate than ourselves. We also hope to hold our fantastic weekly social events on Wednesday evenings which are a great opportunity to grow friendships and build a fabulous society together.
This society is more than just an orchestra, we’re a family! We welcome newcomers with open arms as we are a group of students with one thing in common: we all love music! Whether you've reached Grade 8 in your instrument or simply just beginning your musical journey, everyone is welcome to join. Also, if you don't play an instrument and just fancy coming along to the rehearsals to listen or to join in with our social events, you are more than welcome!! We have great fun both within our rehearsals as well as at our social events and hope you can join us whether you are new to the university or are already here and fancy joining a fantastic, friendly and welcoming society.
Finally - We are Society of the Year 2016-17!!
